Hematology Protocol: CBC, Hemoglobin, Iron & Immune Balance
The complete blood count (CBC) serves as a window into your body's fundamental health systems, revealing critical information about oxygen-carrying capacity, immune function, and clotting ability. Red blood cells and hemoglobin are responsible for transporting oxygen from your lungs to every tissue in your body, while white blood cells form your immune surveillance system, constantly patrolling for infections and foreign invaders. Platelets, the smallest blood cells, are essential for clotting and preventing excessive bleeding. Beyond simple cell counts, red cell indices like MCV (mean corpuscular volume) reveal whether your red cells are the proper size and contain adequate hemoglobin. Microcytic (small) cells often point to iron deficiency, while macrocytic (large) cells suggest B12 or folate deficiency. This is why the CBC is frequently the first test to reveal underlying health issues, from nutritional deficiencies to chronic inflammation to more serious conditions.
